Common Dental Emergencies

Any dental problem that throws you off your routines can feel like an emergency. Some of the most common reasons for urgent appointments include:

  • Severe toothache
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • Broken or dislodged crown
  • Cracked tooth
  • Trauma to a tooth from an accident
  • Swollen or bleeding gums

Whatever your problem, let us know if you are in pain. No one should have to suffer through a night of dental pain, so we will do our best to get you an appointment ASAP!

What You Should Do

We will do our best to see you quickly, but there are a few immediate care steps you should take in the following situations.

A Knocked-Out Tooth

Bring the tooth with you if it is intact. It is sometimes possible to replace a tooth in the socket if the connective tissues are still attached. Do not wash the tooth, even if it looks dirty. Instead, place it in a small container of milk or saliva before you head to our office. Do not try to replace the tooth yourself, as you could wind up damaging your soft tissues and reducing the possibility of successful reattachment.

Severe Toothache

The term “toothache” can refer a lot of sensations: throbbing, shooting pain, pain when you bite down, temperature sensitivity, etc. Regardless of whether the toothache is constant or intermittent, a toothache should always warrant a call to the dentist.

The most common cause of a toothache is tooth decay and infection, but pain can also be caused by a crack, fracture or failing dental work. Whatever the cause, it will not get better on its own, so the sooner you get an appointment, the better!

Avoid aggravating the tooth by eating only soft foods, taking over-the-counter pain relievers, and holding an ice-pack against the cheek over the tooth. Do not apply ice directly to the tooth. If your toothache is unbearable, an over-the-counter anesthetic such as eugenol (clove oil) can help you numb the tooth until your appointment.

Tooth Damage from an Accident or Injury

If you’ve been in an accident or sustained a blow to the face, first check that you don’t need to seek medical attention. You should always seek medical care before you go to a dentist, even if a tooth has been knocked out. If you have bleeding wounds or the possibility of a broken bone, go straight to an ER or medical facility before you call River Birch Dental.

A Broken/Dislodged Crown

If your crown has been knocked loose or fallen out, first check to see if it seems to be intact. If it is still in one piece, try to replace it, to protect the tooth until your appointment. You can do this with a small piece of chewed sugarless gum, and this will provide a temporary fix and prevent sensitivity. You may also be able to find temporary dental cement at a drug store, but the important thing is to keep the tooth covered until your appointment. In many cases, a dislodged crown can be reattached in our office without having to fabricate a replacement.
